Minutes for 12/11/13

The group meeting was a productive session. In the previous meeting, we had highlighted some paired radio and television advertisements and then allocated specific advertisements for each member of the group to transcribe and further analyse over reading week. Subsequently, this meant we each had plenty of feedback regarding what we had learnt from transcribing the adverts, allowing us to compare and contrast our findings with other members of the group.

We had categorized our chosen adverts as selling a product or service, so when discussing analysis, we focused on how some of the grammatical and phonological features could be used in persuading the target audience to buy or use this particular product/service, and why. This would then help us in seeing the correlations between radio and TV advertisements.

Another point of discussion was the idea of conducting a pilot study of some variety in order to obtain further research in regards to other peoples general opinions towards these advertisements. This is something that still needed further discussion and we are likely to go into more detail with at our next group meeting.

It was decided that each person should look at all of the selected advertisements as well as re-analyzing the advertisement they chose to look at over reading week. This time, focusing further on grammatical and phonological features that are specific to that pair of advertisements. As well as this, to look at media aspects that may effect linguistic content of radio and TV advertisements. We will also continue to research literature that supports our findings.

In week 8, we will be comparing our features and discussing them in more detail. Furthermore, we will then begin to structure these findings so they are ready to be added to a presentation for the exhibition in week 11.
