Meeting with Alison

After I (Emily G) met with Alison today and discussed the progress our group has made, it was a relief to hear we are on the right track. Discussing our project clarified any queries the group had raised and highlighted that work that needs to be completed in the following weeks.

The main points taken from the meeting were;
  • 1.       It isn't necessarily a bad thing if our findings don’t demonstrate what our research question might suggest, i.e. a difference in the use of language between the two mediums
  • 2.       We shouldn't aim to find readings that ‘support’ our findings, but instead to read continuously throughout the research project noting relevant literature.
  • 3.       It may be a good idea to explore different routes other than simply looking at lexical varieties as there may not be a major difference between all adverts. Therefore it was suggested we consider influences from the media, phonological and grammatical varieties etc.
  • 4.       All the adverts we use should follow the same notion, i.e. persuasion to purchase a product/provision of advice.
